EDGAR B. AND ELLEN K. MARCHANT
Edgar Marchant and Ellen kerns met in St. John, Ks., where she was a school teacher and he was practicing law. They were married in 1884.
Ellen was born in Mannington, W.Va. Sept. 1, 1866 and moved to St. John with her parents, Emery S. and barbara Jane (Kendall) Kerns. She attended the public schools and Normal Institute ffor teachers, then teaching in the garde school in St. John. The Marchants had a son who died in infancy.
Marchants moved to Cleo Springs, O.T. in 1901. Starting a newspaper but since Cleo already had one paper they moved to Aline and started the Aline Chronoscope printing office. Newspapering wasn't a paying business, there wasn't enough advertising. The newspaper was kept alive though because Mr. Marchant was able to pursue his legal practice in the Alfalfa Co. town. Ellen learned to hand set type and did most of the news reporting. They also published papers at Clinton and McAlestar in Okla. The Marchants were appointed official Host and Hostess at the Oklahoma Building for the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904. They took with them as an assistant Garnett Fields of Aline. Edgar was involved in politics in the territory serving in several appointed offices. He was a representative in the Okla. Constitutional Convention, helping to make Okla. the 46th state in The U.S. Mr. Marchant was a 32nd degree Mason. They were still publishing the weekly paper in Aline when Mr. Marchant died in 1919. Ellen sold the paper and worked as a reporter on the Alva Courier until her appointment as Aline Postmistress in 1923. Serving for a number of years. Ellen and her sister, Anna Evans, the widow of Dr. E.E. Evans, lived together until they both entered the Masonic Home for the aged in Guthrie. It was here that Ellen passed away in Aug. 1967, just one week short of her 101st birthday. When she had her 100th birthday a party was held for her in the home. She received more than 200 greeting cards including one from Gov. Bellman. At that time she still used her typewriter to write friends and relatives, read the daily papers, and worked cross word puzzles (for which she had always been a avid fan), and had crocheted a doily that year. Ellen's sister Anna was 92 years old at the time of the party. She lived several years longer than Ellen. Mrs. Marchant was a Charter member of the Aline Eastern Star. Both the Marchants are buried in the Aline Star Cemetery.
